Why is my AC freezing in Florida humidity?

Humidity supplies the moisture. The freeze starts when the coil drops below freezing from weak airflow or low refrigerant. Manufacturers list dirty filters, blocked returns, dirty coils, and leaks first.

Thaw checklist (do this first)

Cool Off at the thermostat. Running a frozen evaporator coil can damage the system. Bumping the setpoint to 80 is not the same. Set the fan to On so room air helps melt the ice. Expect drips. Do not chip the ice. Warm air and time only. Pull the filter and replace if dirty. Open returns and supply vents. Wait until every bit of ice is gone. Restart Cool, then watch. Fan back to Auto. If frost returns, shut it Off and call a local HVAC person.

What not to do

Do not keep running Cool while the coil is iced.
Do not chip, scrape, or pour boiling water into the cabinet.
Do not buy a jug of refrigerant and “top it off.”
